From BaZi to DUC: Discover, Understand and Control Your Decisions

A BaZi reading can give us a large amount of information.
But information alone does not make a decision.
This is why Yi Wisdom applies the DUC Methodology — Discover, Understand and Control (掘、解、握).
DUC provides a structured way to move from identifying a BaZi pattern towards deciding how that understanding can actually be used.
Consider a common question:
“Should I leave my job and start a business?”
Instead of looking for an immediate yes-or-no answer, we work through three stages.
Discover 掘 — What Is Actually Present?
The first stage is not prediction.
It is discovery.
From the BaZi perspective, we may examine the person’s Day Master, Five Element relationships, relevant structures, changing cycles and other patterns connected with career, resources and opportunity.
But Yi Wisdom does not stop with the chart.
We also need to discover the person’s actual circumstances.
How much experience does the person have?
Why do they want to leave their job?
Do they already have a business idea?
Have they tested the market?
Do they have sufficient financial resources?
What responsibilities do they have?
The BaZi chart provides one source of information.
Reality provides another.
Both need to be discovered.
Understand 解 — What Does the Pattern Mean Here?
Suppose two people have BaZi patterns suggesting strong entrepreneurial tendencies.
Should both start businesses?
One may have ten years of industry experience, sufficient savings and customers already interested in the service.
The other may have little experience, limited savings and simply be unhappy with their current manager.
The BaZi pattern may appear similar.
The circumstances are not.
This is why Understand 解 is essential.
We need to interpret the pattern within its context.
Rather than saying:
“Your BaZi is suitable for business.”
we ask:
How is this pattern expressing itself now?
What supports it?
What challenges it?
What risks are present?
What opportunities actually exist?
Understanding connects pattern with circumstance.
Control 握 — What Can Be Acted Upon?
Control does not mean controlling fate.
It means identifying what is within our influence.
If entrepreneurship appears appropriate but the person is not financially ready, the answer does not have to be simply:
Start or don’t start.
There may be other possibilities.
Build savings first.
Test the business while remaining employed.
Validate potential customers.
Develop missing skills.
Reduce financial commitments.
Plan a gradual transition.
Now the BaZi analysis has moved from prediction towards practical decision-making.
Discover the pattern.
Understand the circumstances.
Control the response.
The Chart Doesn’t Make the Decision
DUC changes the relationship between the person and the BaZi reading.
The practitioner does not need to make every decision for the client.
And the client does not need to surrender responsibility to the chart.
BaZi provides another perspective from which to understand the situation.
DUC helps organise that understanding.
The human still makes the decision.
That is an important principle within Yi Wisdom.
